Hydrogen Fiscal Metering Flow Measurement System on site

Every pound counts. Legal compliant. Traceable.

GH2 Source - Stationary Certified Custody Transfer Flow Measuring System for Gaseous Hydrogen directly at the source

GH2 Source is the stationary, fiscal metering measurement solution for hydrogen trailer filling – developed for hydrogen suppliers and trailer manufacturers.

The fiscal metering hydrogen volume measurement directly at the electrolyzer enables billing-secure and regulatory-compliant recording of the H₂ volume produced. Particularly for industrial hydrogen production, funding projects, or custody transfer applications, and MID-compliant and PTB-approved measurement solution is essential.

Through direct integration of the measurement system at the electrolyzer, the actual hydrogen volume produced is recorded with precision – independent of downstream pressure losses or storage processes.

GH2 SOURCE: Legal certainty and trust through metrology compliance

GH2 SOURCE offers a specially developed solution for hydrogen refueling stations. The system ensures precise and reliable quantity measurement, ideal for filling H₂ trailers and MEGCs. By fulfilling all legal and metrological requirements, GH2 SOURCE becomes an indispensable component of modern infrastructures.

Why GH2 SOURCE metrological approval makes the decisive difference:

Excellence for operators (plant owners & infrastructure operators)

  • Legally compliant billing: With GH2 SOURCE, you fully comply with the German Measurement and Calibration Act (MessEG). This is a mandatory requirement for commercially selling hydrogen to third parties and protects you from legal
  • Maximum economic efficiency: Highly precise measurements minimize “unexplained losses” between production and delivery. At current hydrogen market prices, every kilogram directly impacts your balance sheet.
  • Easy integration & scalability: Thanks to its robust design, the system can be easily integrated into existing plants and is immediately ready for the commercial rollout of your infrastructure.

Trust for customers (logistics companies & trailer fleets)

  • Transparency following the “fuel pump principle”: Your customers are assured that they only pay for what is actually delivered. A certified receipt creates a professional business basis and prevents complaints.
  • Optimal utilization: Precise measurement of filling quantities enables trailer operators to utilize their capacities (e.g., MEGCs) up to the technically permissible limit without having to allow for safety margins due to measurement uncertainties.
  • Proof for sustainability: Accurate data forms the foundation for certifying CO₂ savings. Customers require exact quantity values to demonstrate their own decarbonization targets and funding requirements.

Conclusion:

GH2 SOURCE is not just a technical measurement system, but an economic enabler. It converts technical data into reliable, billable values and thus secures the profitability of your hydrogen infrastructure.

Technical comparison: GH2 SOURCE vs. pressure-difference method

In practice, the “pressure-temperature-method (P/T-measurement)” (calculating the quantity based on pressure and temperature in the vessel) is still often used. Below you can see why GH2 SOURCE (based on modern flow measurement) is the superior choice for commercial operation:

FeaturePressure-temperature-method (P/T-Measurement)GH2 SOURCE (mass flow measurement)
Measurement principleIndirect calculation (P, T, Z-factor) Direct mass flow measurement
AccuracyError-prone (4 – 8 % deviation)Highest precision (<1.5% error)

Challenges in H₂ Trailer Filling Directly at the Source

H₂ trailer filling directly at the source places high demands on measurement technology and regulatory compliance. Precise and standards-compliant design is critical for safe and economical operation.

  • Regulatory Pressure: Hydrogen sales require calibration-compliant measurement
  • Mobile Trailer Solutions –  No approval available – the installation is stationary, not mobile
  • Unknown Measurement Ranges: The actual measurement ranges achieved at the source during trailer filling are often unknown, making the design of a suitable measurement solution a significant challenge

Our Solution: GH2 Source

GH2 Source is a stationary, fiscal metering volume measurement system for gaseous hydrogen at the source. It enables legally secure billing during trailer filling – reliable, robust, and field-proven.

  • Measurement Directly at the Electrolyzer: Hydrogen volume is captured before compression, storage, or grid injection, providing a clear reference for actual production volume – systematic measurement errors are minimized.
  • Maximum Production Data Transparency: Direct source measurement enables precise production balances, reliable KPI evaluations, and targeted optimization of electrolyzer operation, including early efficiency detection.
  • High Legal Security: fiscal metering design per MID and national metrology law ensures billing-secure volume determination, regulatory compliance, and long-term investment security.

The GH2 Hub from TrigasDM® is a stationary, fiscal metering flow measurement system for gaseous hydrogen, designed for unloading hydrogen trailers at stationary receiving points and trailer exchange stations. The system enables precise and legally compliant recording of the delivered H₂ volumes—regardless of fluctuating flow rates. GH2 Hub thus provides the legal basis for billing stationary hydrogen refueling in industrial applications.

Our RMS Hydrogen Reference Measurement System makes it possible to conduct a complete metrological inspection, for example, of a hydrogen refueling station, within a few hours. The measurement results from our RMS serve as the basis for the metrological inspection of the facility or for acceptance testing. The measurement system is characterized by its compact size and can be easily transported in a passenger car. A measurement campaign can thus be carried out by a single person in approximately 3 or 4 hours.

GH2 Source was developed to measure high-density hydrogen at the source’s delivery point for filling trailers. The flow measurement system stands out from competing systems thanks to its temperature-independent mass flow measurement and, thanks to its certification in accordance with the Measurement and Calibration Ordinance, guarantees legally compliant billing, high accuracy, and safe operation of the system.

The compact GH2+ system series was developed to measure and track highly compressed hydrogen transported in trailer vehicles. The metering system stands out from competing solutions through temperature-independent mass flow measurement and guarantees, thanks to certification in accordance with applicable national and international metrology standards, high accuracy and safe system operation.
